Hello Kindergarten Families,
As you know we are leading this Friday’s prayer service at 8:30 in the school hall. It will run about 20 or so minutes. Please send kids in perfect uniforms with a flower. All are welcome (grandparents, siblings, nannies etc.) but moms you will not want to miss this.
Spring MAPS- we will be taking our first of two MAPS this coming Tuesday, May 5th. This final series of MAP tests for the year is very important. Please make sure your child is set up to do his/her best with plenty of sleep and a healthy lunch. We will be taking our test at 12:50.
These final weeks will primarily be a time when we “put it all together”. One special way we will do this is by having each student read a book to the class. Please help your child find a “just right” book (one they can read with expression and fluency and is not too long) to share with us beginning May 18th. This will require some practice. Please be sure they can easily read the book with a presentation level voice and are comfortable turning the book around to show us the pictures. Any Level 1 or Level 2 books, Piggie and Gerald, or Fly Guy are great “just right books”. If you would like your child to check out one of my just right books please let me know.
I am also helping the children assemble a “Kindergarten Time Capsule” not to be opened until high school graduation. Please send in an adult size shoebox this week. Then between now and Tuesday May 26th please collect some items to go in the time capsule. What you include or how you do this is really up to you, but the original kindergarten time capsule I saw had a letter addressed to the child as they graduate from high school sharing who the young child is now and dreams for them as they mature into young adults. Letters from grandparents are also sweet. Feel free to send in small mementoes you think might be fun to see in 12 years too. Last year I had packed up several jumpers, leotards, cleats and Lego guys. It makes me teary as I write this knowing firsthand how quickly kids grow up, but this is a fun way to capture and save the special little one they are right now. Again, please send the box in this week and all items to be put in by 5/26.
Lunches of Love: Kindergarten is signed up for Lunches of Love during the month of May. This is a cherished Holy Rosary tradition, and we are honored to continue it this month. Items that make good lunches include nuts/trail mix, fruit cups, protein bars, individually packaged chips/crackers, Vienna sausages, jerky, Ritz cheese/crackers (shelf-stable only), and a plastic spoon/fork. Water is the drink of choice. We also encourage students and families to write an encouraging and positive note with each lunch (no names, please). Students can bring in lunches whenever they are complete. Students are highly encouraged to take part in the purchasing and packing of the lunches! Thank you.

Curriculum
Language Arts – This week’s theme is “What do children learn in Kindergarten?” Skills we will be working on this week: rhyming, long vowels, blending and segmenting phonemes, substitute phonemes, reading with fluency, and writing complete sentences on a single topic.
Sight words- Please make sure you’re practicing every night so the kids gain fluency. Fluency- the ability to quickly and precisely recognize words.
Math- 3-dimensional shapes- Identify and describe shapes. Correctly naming shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.
Homework
Tuesday- Happy numbers
Wednesday – Choose a “just right” book and practice.
